I love to hand make baby gifts. They are personal that way and I pray over the baby while I sew. One of the easiest, most functional, yet cute gifts are burp cloths. I can use up fabric scraps with them, also.
I buy the gerber prefolds (not flats) at walmart for $1 each. Cut a rectangle the side of the middle rectagle of the prefold with some extra for seam allowance. I like to add a pretty substantial seam allowance or else it's really hard to get it to stay under and not come out while sewing.
Iron the sides under and pin to the prefold. Then I sew it on! Sometimes I use a tight zig zag stich to pretty it up, but a strait stitch works fine also.
